Obituary: Stephen Delano / Everyone wore a piece of work of local jewelry wholesaler

Most Pittsburghers hadn't heard of Stephen Delano, but untold thousands wore a little piece of him around their necks and on their hands.

Mr. Delano, of Mt. Lebanon, who for a quarter century helped run a Pittsburgh jewelry wholesaler that supplied jewelry, gems and precious metals to retailers in Pennsylvania and six other states, died Saturday after a two-year battle with skin cancer.

He was 59.

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Delano started work at a jewelry wholesaler that eventually went bankrupt. In 1984, he and business partner Dale Riether founded Nexus Inc., a Pittsburgh-based jewelry wholesaler.

"There are a lot of folks throughout the Tri-State area who are wearing wedding bands and diamond rings that came through Nexus," said Mr. Delano's brother, KDKA-TV reporter Jon Delano.

Like many melanoma victims, after he learned of his skin cancer, Mr. Delano became an advocate of frequent, full-body skin checkups.

"He kept reminding us until we did it," Jon Delano said. "You can't always see these things. A mole is a mole. You don't think too much about it. And all of a sudden, it becomes lethal."

In addition to his brother, Mr. Delano is survived by his wife, Diane Zak Delano; his mother, June S. Delano; children Lindsay Monikowski of Cranberry and Aaron Delano of Mt. Lebanon; brothers Christopher Delano of Swathmore, Delaware County, and Michael Delano of Mt. Lebanon; a sister, Sarah Delano of Greenfield; and two grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1066 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon. Memorial contributions may be made to AIM At Melanoma, a skin cancer foundation.
