Woman Finds Stolen Wedding Ring In Pawn Shop - KKTV

Posted: 28 May 2010 11:53 AM PDT

Kari Robinson loves wedding rings and she loves shopping for jewelry in pawn shops.

Robinson owns five wedding rings but back in December, she noticed one of them was missing. She thought someone she knows took it from her home.

This week- five months after the ring went missing-Robinson was shopping in a St. Paul, Minnesota pawn shop, and there in one of the cases was her missing wedding ring.

It was at the same store where her husband bought it six years ago.

She never filed a police report about the ring but police are now looking into the case, using surveillance video from the pawn shop to try to identify who brought in the ring.

Police are holding the ring as evidence for now, but Robinson hopes to have her jewelry back soon.

She says she'll buy it back from the pawn shop if she has to.

Local love: jewelry designer Mija Jewelry - Examiner

Posted: 28 May 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Jewelry designer Michelle Guest, whose whimsical pieces are both delicate and sweet, hadn't planned on this profession. Graduating from UCLA in 2005 with a bachelors in Communications Studies, Guest had planned on a job in film production. The year after she graduated, she took on the hobby of jewelry making. Inspired by her nieces, she crafted two little gold chain bracelets, each with a single pearl from her sister's broken pearl necklace. Michelle's nieces loved them so much, it quickly became their security blanket, refusing to wear anything else.

Her sister realized that jewelry for little girls were few and far between, with choices limited to either super expensive or garish and cheesy. Convinced there was a huge demand for sweet, simple jewelry for girls, she convinced the potential designer to create a line of jewelry for little girls.

Thus, Mija Jewelry was born.

Originally started as a children's line, it has since evolved to a women's collection and in turn a bridal collection, inspired by Michelle's own desires to have beautiful jewelry for her own wedding as a recently engaged bride-to-be.

Mija pays homage to Michelle's older sister Jani, who encouraged her to pursue her dream. The name is a combination of Michelle and Jani.

Mija Jewelry was recently featured on the cover of Self magazine, with Grey's Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo sporting bangles by Mija. DC District Weddings Blog and Washingtonian Style Section Online have recognized Michelle's talents.

Michelle currently lives in Glover Park. Pieces can currently be purchased online and at Lou Lou Boutique in Dupont Circle and at Sherman Pickey in Georgetown, and Dalton Brody on Idaho Avenue.

What inspires you to create a piece?

I find my inspiration from everywhere! One of the pieces I am most excited about, which will be unveiled in our new spring/summer collection, was inspired by a tattoo on the back of a girl sitting at the bar in Sushi Ko in Glover Park! Somehow, that tattoo stuck in my head and ended up turning into a necklace design!

What type of materials do you use?

We use sterling silver, 14k gold, 18k gold, gemstones, and pearls.

What is your take on local DC/DMV style?
I feel like DC style and fashion is really picking up. When I first started, I was focusing more on markets like LA, NY, and London. But, now we have quite a few DC customers and stores.
