NEW HAVEN — —

A nurse from the Hospital of St. Raphael was walking to her car Tuesday night when a man crept up behind her and demanded her wallet and jewelry, according to police.

Police said that the woman was wearing a $20,000 wedding ring.

The robbery happened at 10:22 p.m., in the rear of 1441 Chapel Street, police said. The nurse told police that the man stuck an object in her back, which she believed to be a knife, and told her to hand over the valuables.

The woman gave the man her wallet and her wedding ring, valued at $20,000, police said. The suspect then fled on foot down Chapel Street.

He has been described as a tall black man, who was wearing a black mask, blue jeans and sneakers at the time of the robbery.

The wallet was later recovered in the parking lot.

Police are investigating the incident.
