A 19-year-old wearing an ankle monitor was among a group of teens arrested in a smash-and-grab jewelry heist at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville, police said.

Fulton County Jail Barry Smith Jr.

Barry Smith Jr. was out on bond on numerous charges in Fulton County, including aggravated assault and armed robbery. Smith's ankle monitor allowed him to leave home during the day to seek employment, Channel 2 Action News reported.

During that time, Smith and eight other suspects robbed Jeweler's Touch, Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack said. Smith's ankle monitor wasn't the reason he was arrested.

"We didn't know until after we took him into custody," Womack said.

The group used hammers to smash two jewelry cases, stealing $14,000 worth of merchandise about 2 p.m. last Saturday. Five suspects were arrested outside the mall, while four got away in two waiting vehicles, Womack said.

Womack said police are making good progress in identifying the four suspects still at large, and he expressed confidence they'll be caught soon.

In addition to Smith, police arrested 18-year-olds Antonio Johnson and Timothy Slaton and two juveniles. All five arrested are from Atlanta, Womack said.

Fulton County records show Smith was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Feb. 6, 2009. He was indicted on 22 charges, including aggravated assault, armed robbery, auto theft, and participating in a street gang.
