Same-sex marriage law gives a boost to wedding business - Fosters Daily Democrat Posted: 18 Oct 2010 07:23 AM PDT PORTSMOUTH — Wedding businesses were just as excited as equal rights groups when gay marriage became legal in the Granite State earlier this year. It opened up a new market during one of the worst economic periods the country has ever seen. Some of those businesses attended the third annual Same Love, Same Rights wedding expo for same-sex couples Sunday at the Sheraton Harborside Hotel. The event was organized by the Rainbow Wedding Network, an Asheville, North Carolina-based organization that provides same-sex wedding services. Founder Cindy Sproul said the same-sex wedding industry has exploded in recent years as more and more states legalize gay marriage. About 22 businesses from New Hampshire and surrounding states set up shop at the expo, providing couples with information about their services. About 200 people attended the free event that was open to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals. "Couples can walk in and find a room full of businesses eager to work with them on their weddings," Sproul said. "There's no awkwardness." Heather Dexter and her fiance, Nicole Robbins, of Portland, Maine, came to look for photographers, caterers and jewelry. They plan on getting married next year in September. Dexter popped the question at a lighthouse last month. They learned about the expo from a lesbian social group in Portland. They said it was a nice, welcoming venue. They said they were disheartened when Maine voters overturned gay marriage in a referendum last year. But they said they will still have a ceremony in Portland then obtain a marriage certificate in another state. At the expo, they spoke with Amy Wilton, owner of a wedding photography business based in Hope, Maine. "This is a market I want to be a part of," said Wilton, who recently shot her first same-sex wedding. She said making gay marriages a bigger part of her business is just as important as supporting same-sex marriage itself.
