Nursing home worker accused of pawning residents' jewelry - msnbc.com Posted: 27 Oct 2010 07:15 PM PDT By Peter Bernard, Lisa A. Davis BAYONET POINT — Little things have been disappearing from residents' rooms at Atria Baypoint Village Assistant Living Facility since May. Cash and jewelry vanished, sometimes even from secured lock boxes or from their hiding places in dresser drawers at the facility at 7927 State Road 52, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. But on Tuesday, Pasco detectives arrested the person they say is responsible for the thefts. Certified nursing assistant Yesenia Matilde Surillo, 43, was booked into the Land O' Lakes Jail on nine counts of grand theft and two counts of false verification of ownership. Detectives say she would keep the cash for herself and then pawn the jewelry for cash. Detectives showed Surillo, 43, evidence from her pawn shop transactions, and she acknowledged having taken items from residents and pawning them, said sheriff's office spokesman Kevin Doll. She said she needed the money, he said. "She's stolen some wedding bands from some of these elderly women, so some of this stuff I would consider heirlooms to the family. So it's very heartbreaking," Doll said. Baypoint Village resident Joan Quinn said she may be a victim. She says some money is missing from her room. "I'm glad they found her. And I hope they really get her out of the system," Quinn said. About $17,000 in cash and jewelry, including an heirloom ring valued at $7,000, was reported stolen, and Surillo collected $8,400 in 14 separate pawn shop transactions, according to Doll. Some of the jewelry was recovered in her car and some jewelry is still missing. The victims range in age from 70s to 98. The thefts weren't reported until June. So far, 18 have been reported. The case is still under investigation. The assisted living center has fired Surillo. Bail for Surillo, of 553 Spring Haven Loop, Spring Hill, is set at $28,000.
