UK supermarket Tesco launches £15 engagement and wedding rings for budget marriages - Gather.com

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 05:05 AM PDT

A popular chain supermarket in the United Kingdom has started a line of jewelry aimed at helping those who want to be married but are on a budget. The jewelry line features engagement rings for £15 (about $23.42 US dollars) and to be super nice, Tesco will even throw in a wedding ring for £15 more! Who knew you could get both your engagement and wedding rings for a total of £30? That's bloody amazing (as the Brits would say)! At least if you end up getting divorced, you know you didn't go out and spend your whole life savings on the rings.

'With gold prices rocketing - they reached £860 per ounce in June - we have found an affordable alternative to help recession-hit Brits get engaged in style.' said an over-excited spokesman for Tesco.

Tesco created this budget jewelry line due to tough economic times. The engagement ring is made of gold-plated silver with a sparkling cubic zirconia. The wedding ring is made of 9 Kt gold. The store insists that it's recession friendly rings look just as great as those that cost £500 or more. Budget band: Tesco's £15 engagement ring, made from gold-plated silver and featuring a zirconia stone

'Most people - other than jewellery experts - would not be able to spot the difference between a gold-plated silver ring with cubic zirconia and a diamond solitaire ring,' the spokesman said, going on to add that  "Gold-plated silver is set to become a huge trend."

It may be a great alternative for the cash-strapped man, but how will the woman who receives it feel? Should she be told that her ring was bought from Tesco for a measly £15? Obviously, if you're getting married, then you're in love (hopefully) so it really shouldn't matter how much the rings cost. However, most women would like their future husband to splurge a little on the rings. It's understandable that some people just can't afford it and it's fine to buy the cheap Tesco version to bide time...as long as it's replaced by a nicer version as soon as the groom-to-be has enough money to do so.
