ETF Gold Demand Outshines Jewelry - Seekingalpha.com

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 12:39 PM PDT

Last week, the World Gold Council launched its quarterly Gold DemandTrends report, and it had lots of lovely statistics to ponder as it surveyed what the gold market looked like for the second quarter of 2010.

ETF Buyers Outweigh Jewelry Buyers

So first off: Who wants gold? Everyone, it seems — particularly investors.

Total gold demand was up 36 percent from this time last year, with gains seen in electronics, physical investment and ETFs. Demand from the jewelry and dentistry sector declined, however, 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively:

Gold Demand (Tonnes): Q1

But by and large, ETF investment contributed the most to the total increase in gold demand. The second quarter saw a huge jump in ETFs inflows, at least for the funds the World Gold Council monitors (which includes the mega-ETF, the SPDR Gold Trust, or GLD). In total, 291.3 tonnes of the yellow metal flowed into ETFs around the world, the second-largest quarterly inflow after Q1'09's record of 465.4 tonnes. That's in spite of average prices remaining in roughly the same ballpark from Q1 2010 to Q2; the average price during the first quarter of this year was $1,109.12/oz, while the average price for the second quarter rose to $1196.74.

In part, ETF gains in Q2 2010 seem huge because the first quarter of 2010 was so anemic, with a net of only 4.5 tonnes of gold flowing into ETFs. But it's also hard to deny the impact of declining confidence in the economic recovery, and renewed fears about a "double-dip" recession. Gold is, and always has been, a safe haven in times of investor stress.

This is particularly clear in the fact that retail investment in gold — as in all those lovely golden bars and coins — also rose 29 percent in the second quarter. Chinese retail investors were especially interested in gold, purchasing 37.7 tonnes of it — 121 percent more than the 14.7 tonnes purchased in the second quarter of 2009. As the WGC tells it, poor performance in stock and property markets encouraged Chinese investors to go for gold.

That said, a number of investors engaged in profit-taking as gold prices rose — those in Japan seemed most keen on the idea. The WGC reported Japan saw a net sell-back of 20 tonnes of gold during the second quarter.

Other Demand Sources

This increase in investment demand is noteworthy in that it outweighed jewelry demand; in fact, not since the first quarter of 2009 has investment in ETFs, bars and coins been larger than that in jewelry. But make no mistake: Jewelry is still an important demand driver, accounting for 39 percent of total usage for gold.

I found it funny that the WGC gave a laundry list of reasons for slow or low jewelry demand, everything from those you'd expect — such as high prices that discourage jewelry spending — to those not exactly on your radar as gold drivers. Among some of my favorites: heavy rains, extreme heat in China, even the distraction caused by the World Cup.

Some of you might be wondering: What about industrial applications? While industrial usage is not a huge driver of gold demand — in fact, it only accounts for about 1 percent of the total — it is a growing sector, as many modern electronic devices contain tiny bits of gold: smart phones, LCD TVs, netbooks, e-readers, iPads and so on. It's definitely something to keep your eye on.

Supply Remains Flat

Gold supply has gone up 17 percent compared with last quarter's levels. For the second quarter of 2010, 1,131.6 tonnes of gold were available. The majority of that, or 644 tonnes, is from total mine supply - 659 tonnes of gold were produced during the second quarter of 2010, but 15 tonnes were held back for producer hedging purposes.

Mine Supply & Gold Price: Q4

The interesting thing to note is that mining production has remained fairly flat since 2005, even as the price of gold has risen over 125 percent. Gold producers don't seem to be jumping on the get-rich-quick train, and have instead opted for steady production.

In fact, an important thing to keep in mind when looking at the price of gold vs. gold production is that some companies use times of high gold prices to mine out ore that is more expensive to reach, therefore extending the life of their gold mines and leaving less-costly-to-mine gold in the ground for later. Of course, gold mining is a finite activity — at some point we'll either run out of gold to mine, or gold that can be mined will require astronomical prices in order to be feasible. But that's a topic for another day.

The Quarter and Year Ahead

Reading through the Gold Demand Trends report, one is left with a pretty positive feeling about the future of gold prices. China and India continue to be poised for further gold demand growth — especially in gold jewelry — as their economies continue to grow. After all, as they get richer, more of the population will have income to buy gold and electronics.

Gold supply, while still positive, is fairly tight, and mine output has remained relatively flat, but as prices rise, more "old gold" — those bars, coins and gold jewelry investments — will come into the market as people cash in on higher prices, though the WGC believes, at least for a while, investors will be holding onto that gold and it will possibly take much higher prices to get that gold into the market.

Looking forward, what can we expect to see? Well, the third quarter is traditionally (minus 2009) a good one for gold demand, especially in gold because India's traditional wedding month is September. Perhaps higher demand — and higher prices — lie ahead.

Platinum Jewelry Dominates the Red Carpet at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards - Forbes

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 09:01 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- While the gowns varied in style and color, A-list television stars opted for classic elegance at the Primetime Emmy Awards tonight wearing platinum jewelry. Whether it was a pair of stud earrings with brilliant white diamonds as seen on Kim Kardashian, or stacked cuff bracelets with colored gemstones on Kyra Sedgwick, platinum transcended all jewelry trends, making our favorite stars stand out on the red carpet. Not only is platinum the highest quality metal, but its natural white color also maximizes the brilliance of diamonds and colored gemstones. It's no wonder why many of Hollywood's most notable style icons from the past also chose platinum for their red carpet jewelry - including Marilyn Monroe, Jackie O., Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly.

Following is a list of stars that celebrated tonight's achievements in PLATINUM:

-- Lea Michele: Platinum and multi-colored mesh diamond necklace, two platinum and champagne diamond bracelets, and a pair of platinum and champagne diamond stud earrings (10 carats) by Lorraine Schwartz. -- Emily Blunt: Platinum and diamond bangle, platinum and diamond ring, platinum and diamond flower hair pin, and a pair of platinum and diamond stud earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Emily's jewelry complemented her platinum engagement ring and wedding band by Neil Lane. -- Kim Kardashian: Platinum cuff with champagne and white diamonds (80 carats), platinum and diamond stud earrings (15 carats), platinum and diamond pinky ring (8 carats), and platinum and diamond hair pins by Lorraine Schwartz. -- January Jones: Platinum and diamond stud earrings (10.12 carats of flawless diamonds), and a platinum and yellow diamond ring by Cartier. -- Kelly Osbourne: Platinum bracelets with black and white diamonds, and a pair of platinum earrings with black diamonds (14 carats each) by Martin Katz. -- Amy Poehler: Platinum and diamond drop earrings, bracelet and ring by Stephen Russell. -- Julie Bowen: Platinum and diamond stud earrings and bracelets by Neil Lane. -- Dianna Agron: Platinum earrings with 246 brilliant-cut diamonds and 2 briolette diamonds (2.54 carats) by Cartier. -- Jessalyn Gilsig: Platinum and brown diamond ring (8 carats) by Chopard. -- Elisabeth Moss: Platinum and diamond earrings (33 carats), two bracelets (179 carats total), and two rings by Chopard. -- Tina Fey: Platinum and black diamond tassel bracelet by Lorraine Schwartz. -- Kyra Sedgwick: Platinum bracelets with multi-colored gemstones, platinum ring with rubellite (60 carats) and diamonds, and a pair of blackened platinum drop earrings by Ofira. -- Lauren Graham: Blackened platinum and diamond star earrings, platinum and diamond bangle, two platinum and diamond rings, and a platinum ring with black agate and diamonds by Ofira. -- Heather Morris: Platinum and diamond stud earrings, and bracelet by Kwiat. -- Cheryl Hines: Platinum and diamond bracelet (37 carats) by Chopard. -- Jenna Fisher: Platinum and natural rough diamond ring (45.61 carats) by Diamond In The Rough. -- Keri Russell: Platinum jewelry by Cathy Waterman. -- Jennifer Carpenter: Two platinum and diamonds bracelets, and drop earrings by Martin Katz. -- Connie Britton: Platinum and diamond earrings, lariat necklace, and cocktail ring by Neil Lane. -- Holland Taylor: Platinum and diamond earrings (9 carats) by Chopard.

About Platinum Jewelry

Platinum is the ideal choice for bridal and fashion jewelry because it holds diamonds and precious gemstones more securely than any other metal. It is not only the highest quality metal, but its density makes it one of the most durable and enduring precious metals. Platinum is also naturally white, unlike white gold, which means it will not cast any tint onto a diamond or gemstone, allowing the stone's genuine color to sparkle brightly. Platinum is also pure and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — WPBF.com

Authorities have arrested a man they said was involved in the shooting death of a West Palm Beach jewelry store owner last month.

Hasan Jones was arrested Friday night on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of John Lauseng, WPBF News 25 reported.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Jones is believed to be involved in the armed robbery that left the 44-year-old dead July 26.

Lauseng, owner of the We Buy Gold coin and jewelry exchange, was shot in the back and in the arm as he tried to escape the robbers, deputies said.

Jones was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail Friday night and was expected to make his first appearance in court sometime Saturday morning, WPBF News 25 reported.

Authorities said they're still looking for two others in connection with the crime.

"I'm ready for all of this to be over with, but I want to make sure they're all caught before I can lay my head on my pillow at night and fall asleep," said Lauseng's wife, Tina.

Tina Lauseng said she now has to run the stores, and as a single mom, she's the only one left to provide for their daughter.

"I've got to move forward every day. I don't know how. It's hard, but I will," she said.

She said she put her husband's wedding band on a necklace as a reminder that he may be gone, but his presence lives on.

"It's the only thing I get from him, so it's next to my heart," she said.

How to sell your gold and diamond jewelry - Orlando Sentinel

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 12:55 AM PDT

All you need to do is turn on the television, listen to the radio or walk past a jewelry mall to know. "The scrap jewelry market is huge, huge, huge," says Reyne Haines, an appraiser who specializes in 20th century decorative arts.

Have an old wedding band or other valuable piece cluttering up your jewelry box?

We asked Haines for her advice on how to appraise, consign, sell it on your own or mail it in to one of the many gold-buying companies that have sprung up out of the ether in recent months.

What if you don't even know what you've got? How can you tell that your jewelry is real?

If you don't know and you're looking to sell these things yourself, there are gold testers and diamond testers you can buy on the Internet. There are also scales so you can weigh things. Gold is going to be marked. Depending on what karat it is, it should be a certain color and weight.

There's no easy way for me to tell you how to tell a diamond from a fake. A diamond tester is the best place to start. The diamond tester won't tell you the clarity or the color, but it will get you started. The smaller diamonds, the clarity and the color don't matter so much because they're small. It starts to make a difference when you're taking about diamonds that are a carat or more.

Is it a good idea to hire an appraiser?

Let's say you inherited your grandmother's really nice watch loaded with diamonds. If it's what looks like a great piece or is big in size of diamonds, you might want to contact a local appraiser. Don't tell them you want insurance value, because insurance value is inflated. Tell them you want to know the current resale price of your item: What should I expect to get for it if I sell it today? You need to spend whatever the cost is to have it appraised so you're clear on what it is you're selling.

What you want to do if you're selling it on your own is make sure you have all the factual information about that item up front. Find out the color of the stone, the carat weight, what kind of gold it is, what period it was made, and you can try to sell it on your own online at a place like EBay or Craigslist. I would always try that route before I would go to a dealer.

How do you find a good appraiser?

Sometimes appraisers are generalists. If you're looking to have jewelry appraised and you go to somebody that specializes in jewelry, you shouldn't have a problem with it not being appraised correctly.

What about consigning a piece to a dealer?

It would be best to go to the Internet and reach out to people who specialize in estate jewelry to see if they'll take your piece on consignment. If they take your piece, they're going to go after the most money for you because the more they make for you, the more they make themselves. With my shops, I take things valued at $500 and more.

So many companies are popping up to take our unwanted gold jewelry off our hands, how do you know which will give you the best value?

They're businesses, and they have to make a profit, so they're going to pay a wholesale price, not a retail price. My best suggestion is that you go on the Internet and find out what gold is trading for so you know what it's worth.

Judging from all the pictures of people in white dresses and tuxedos on my Facebook news feed every week, wedding season is in full swing.

As many new brides will tell you, planning a wedding isn't cheap or easy. But there are a few apps that can offer a little more sanity for brides - and grooms - to be.

Brides magazine, which is published by Conde Nast and has been the wedding bible since 1934, last week published the latest version of its own iPhone app, called Brides Wedding Genius.

Probably because the free app is created by a magazine, the layout of the app appears to be fairly simple and easy on the eye, with beautiful photos and illustrations.

It contains a "guides" section, with tips and ideas for gowns, bridesmaids' dresses, jewelry and more, and each tip can be stored in an "inspirations" folder, just as if you had a three-ring binder with wedding ideas. The app also offers local shops and resources that can be used to find jewelry or complete various tasks.

It also offers techniques for saving and organizing and planning the wedding, including how to delegate tasks to others. Many of the best features, such as the ability to sync with an account on the Brides website or to send tasks to your bridesmaids, require an upgraded version of the app, which costs $2.99.

There are detailed tips to make the day go easier. According to an article by The New York Times, the app suggests that wedding preparations include scuffing the soles of shoes with sandpaper or choosing flowers that won't wilt easily.

No promise that the app will keep a wife-to-be from becoming a bridezilla, but this app appears to genuinely offer help for those planning a wedding.

Hilary Duff Shares Wedding Photo! - Entertainment Online

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 06:19 AM PDT

Hilary Duff's big day began all wrong, but it certainly didn't end that way.

"I started my day with a chipped tooth!" she reveals in the new issue of OK! "My wedding planner snuck me out to the dentist! Thank goodness it was fixed within the hour."

Fortunately, everything else went smoothly for the 22-year-old bride as she tied the knot with Mike Comrie last weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Walking down the aisle in front of about 100 guests, Duff wore a Vera Wang gown with an organza mermaid look that was adorned with giant blossoms while carrying a bouquet of blush dahlias.

"There are not even words to describe it," says the starlet about her dress. "It's exactly what I imagined, plus 10 times better."

Duff says she also abided by the tradition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

"I wore blue underwear and borrowed all of the jewelry [from Van Cleef & Arpels], and the something old was my great-grandmother's cameo, which I wore on the inside of my dress. The dress itself was new."

Upon exchanging vows, the newly married couple joined their loved ones under a muslin tent for the reception, which, according to Duff, featured truffled corn ravioli, pepper-crusted rib-eye steak and miso-glazed black cod, as well as a dessert station that included ice cream sandwiches with hot fudge dipping sauce.

Sounds like husband and wife are definitely off to a sweet start!

"American Chopper" star Paul Teutul Jr. claims he still loves his father -- fellow "Chopper" star Paul Teutul Sr. -- despite the fact that Big Paul blew off his son's wedding last weekend.

Junior tells TMZ, "It's always sad when a father doesn't come to his own son's wedding, but I still love him, and the truth of the matter is it was an absolutely perfect day and I wouldn't have changed anything."

Junior and his bride Rachael married at Bonnet Island Estate in Bonnet Island, NJ. Crazy wedding details included: $28,000 in flower arrangements, a six-tier pink velvet cake with lemon buttercream that featured handmade sugar flowers to match the floral design, and a post-ceremony butterfly release under an arched trellis garden while the strings played "Here Comes the Sun."

As we previously reported, the two Pauls haven't been on good terms in a while ... after they clashed over their motorcycle business.

Junior and Senior have been in an ongoing legal battle for months now and, according to sources, Senior was invited ... but didn't attend.

We reached out to Paul Sr. -- but the big mustache refused to comment.

Hayden Panettiere turned 21 last weekend ... and she shared the whole experience with her fellow "Scream 4" castmates -- plus a bunch of fire breathers, burlesque dancers and oompa loompas.

It all went down near the "Scream 4" set in Ann Arbor, MI -- according to our sources, David Arquette helped organize the blowout party at some huge 4-story venue ... then filled it with crazy performers from Beacher's Madhouse.

As we previously reported, Arquette -- who also stars in the next "Scream" installment -- recently inked a lucrative deal with BM creator Jeff Beacher ... all in the hopes of bringing the Vegas mega-show to Hollywood.

As for that random dolphin -- it's actually a CAKE -- specifically designed because Hayden loves the little guys.

As for Hayden's BF Wladimir Klitschko -- he missed the party, but for a good reason. Dude is locked down at his training camp for his upcoming fight against Samuel Peter in Germany.

Can you guess which Hollywood couple was spotted with their son at the farmers market yesterday?

Showing off her confidence in a violet swimsuit and gorgeous flowing red gown, Navarrette won last night's pageant -- held at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Navarrete replaces Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela -- stopping the country's two-year winning streak.

Besides the crown, Jimena's winnings also include an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign, plus jewelry, clothes and shoes.

Check out all the pageant pics above!
