Atherton housekeeper gets 16-month prison sentence in theft of jewelry ... - The Almanac Online Posted: 26 May 2010 06:14 PM PDT An Atherton housekeeper at a Selby Lane residence was sentenced May 25 to 16 months in state prison on charges of grand theft and possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of jewelry valued at $180,000, prosecutors said. | Renee Cuela, 44, who pleaded "no contest" to the charges in February, must pay restitution to victim of $64,000, plus $560 in fines. She was sentenced by Judge Susan Etezadi of the San Mateo County Superior Court. The theft occurred in August 2008. Her prison time will be reduced by the nine days she spent in county jail, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe in a report. Ms. Cuela, who is now in custody, will serve 50 percent of her sentence since this conviction does not involve registering as a sex offender, nor does it qualify as a strike under the three-strikes law, Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti said. The missing jewelry came to light when the residents of the Selby Lane home returned from a trip to discover what initially seemed like a burglary, but there were no signs of forced entry and the house was unlocked, prosecutors said. The stolen jewelry included a pair of diamond earrings valued at $60,000, two wedding rings and a diamond necklace. The nanny employed at the residence told authorities that Ms. Cuela had taken her shopping one afternoon and "constantly acted like she wanted to keep (the) nanny away from the house," prosecutors said. Ms. Cuela also stole about $10,000 over several months through the use of the nanny's debit card, prosecutors added. Saying she could not face either the family or the nanny, Ms. Cuela left them letters in May 2009 admitting that she had stolen from them, prosecutors said. Ms. Cuela later admitted in an interview with police that she had acted in concert with her boyfriend and had pawned much of the stolen jewelry, prosecutors said. She also apologized for the thefts. Lights, camera, jewelry: a photographer is reinvented - Examiner Posted: 26 May 2010 03:37 PM PDT It was Key West, Florida that first captivated photographer Susan Pitts. The lush landscape and beautiful waters were a photographer's dream. Initially Susan worked in color photography with her focus on portraits of children and wedding images. Over the years Susan decided to try black and white photography. She took classes at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She loved black and white so much that she added a darkroom in her home. Susan learned how to incorporate personal photos into framelike pieces of jewelry for around the neck. It was like a jewelry brag book and certainly a conversation piece. She went on to include her extensive vintage postcard collection into her designs. By 2006, her business took off when she opened her Etsy store called OliviaMoon. Olivia Moon is Susan's 93 year old grandmother who inspires her daily. Susan has now included bridal charms to her collection and they have been featured nationally. These are framed charms that can be added to bridal bouquets for a personalized touch. They make lovely keepsakes for the wedding party as well. So what are some of the things Susan has done on the road to success? 1. She followed her passion. 2. She added additional expertise. 3. She kept an income flow while experimenting in a new arena. 4. She focused on slow growth. 5. She identified market niches. What makes Susan's story so great is that she had an attainable goal. This should give hope and ideas to artists of all kinds. Do what you love and you can rise above! Thank you Susan for sharing your wonderful story. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
