Two men pleaded not guilty Monday to charges they were involved in the shooting death of a veteran police officer who responded to an armed robbery at a department store jewelry counter. One suspect was also killed.

Officer John Maguire was one of several officers who responded to 911 calls about a robbery at Kohl's just before 9 p.m. Sunday in the midst of a snowstorm.

Maguire was chasing two suspects on foot when the gunfire began. Maguire and 57-year-old Dominic Cinelli, whom police identified as the man who fired the fatal shot, were both struck.

Maguire was taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where he was pronounced dead. Cinelli of Woburn was pronounced dead at the scene.

A visibly shaken Woburn police Chief Philip Mahoney told reporters that Maguire was planning to work one more year before retiring and was moving from the night shift to the day shift in anticipation.

"We do not have shootings in Woburn. It's not that type of community, and last night Officer Maguire lost his life defending it right in the middle of Washington Street," he said. "It was almost like the Wild West between the two of them."

Investigators said the 60-year-old Maguire was shot four times. He is survived by his wife and two children, ages 21 and 22.

Heavily armed police officers and state troopers used dogs to search nearby stores and retail complexes for other suspects, eventually arresting 19-year-old Scott Hanwright and 51-year-old Kevin Dingwell, both of nearby Wakefield.

Hanwright was charged Monday with first-degree murder and ordered held without bail. Dingwell, who police say was the getaway driver, was charged with being an accessory after the fact and ordered held on $1,000 bail.

Both pleaded not guilty during their arraignment. The Middlesex district attorney's office didn't have information on their lawyers.

Mahoney, who has been on the force for 41 years, said it's the first time he can recall that that an officer has died in the line of duty in the city.

Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin remembered Maguire as a hardworking police officer who was proud to be carrying on a family tradition. His father once served as police chief.

It turns out that Crystal Harris had seen it coming for she and Hugh had talked about getting married and she picked the ring herself.

After ' and 's engagement rings were revealed to public, 's fiancee shows off her own new sparkler. The Playboy Playmate tweeted a picture of the bling on December 29, writing "For those of you who have been asking to see my ring here it is... My engagement ring from my love."

Hugh gave the ring to Crystal when he proposed to her on Christmas night, December 25. The 24-year-old beauty reveals that the jewelry was kept in a Little Mermaid music box. But instead of popping up the important question, the Playboy mogul told his girlfriend, "I hope it fits." The ring was a little too big but it has been resized so she can wear it now.

Crystal and Hugh had talked about getting married before and she even designed the ring, a little over 3-carat round diamond set on a pave diamond-and-platinum band. "I picked out the diamond with Mary [O'Connor, Hugh's longtime secretary]. It all happened so fast and we're happy. Nothing's changed. Everything is the same," she says to via phone.

On their wedding plans, the blonde girl shares that they are planning a summer wedding, which will take place at the Mansion. She wants a small and intimate ceremony which she and Hugh share with "close friends and family." Crystal also wants to design her own dress.

But they will not be in rush to have a child as Crystal says, "I've never really been the wanting children type. I just have a bunch of different projects I'm working on and that's fun for me so that's what I'm going to do."

About a prenuptial agreement, Crystal is up for anything Hugh wants. "Whatever Hef wants me to do. I'm happy. I have the singing thing going for me and other things so whatever he wants. I don't know anything about that stuff. I don't care. Whatever," she admits.

And she has got her parents' blessing, saying "Both my parents are super supportive of everything and whatever makes Hef and I happy makes them happy. I couldn't be happier." , Hugh's former girlfriend, has even congratulated them, tweeting soon after the engagement news broke, "Congratulations! How exciting! Wishing you the both the best!"

Rumor Patrol! Which Royal Wedding Stories Are True? | Kate Middleton, Prince William

As excitement builds for the royal wedding, so do the rumors about the bride and groom. So, what's fact and what's fiction?

• Rumor: Due to Kate Middleton's equine allergy, the couple won't have the traditional horse-drawn carriage ride on the big day.

Likely fiction. Palace aides have not confirmed how the couple will be ushered to and from their wedding site, Westminster Abbey. But a source suggests that horses, carriages and the usual finery will be included. "There will be a procession," says the insider.

• Rumor: Kate's getting advice from Camilla.

Not entirely fiction. Prince William's stepmother, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, may be among the members of the royal family helping the upcoming princess acclimate to her new life. "Catherine will be sitting down with senior members of the royal family and members of Prince William's and Prince Harry's household to learn the ropes and find out about engagements and visits," a member of the palace staff tells PEOPLE.

And of course, she's already got her number one advisor: her fiancé. "William's a great teacher, so he'll be up to help me," she said in her first TV interview.

• Rumor: The couple must have marital counseling.

Fact. "Anyone who gets married in the Church of England will get marriage preparation from whoever is conducting the service," says a press spokesman at the Church of England. "He will talk from vast experience of marrying other couples, and talk about commitment and life as a married couple, what it means to enter into marriage and the sanctity of it."

There will also be a particular role in the counseling process for the Bishop of London, Dr. Richard Cartres, who is a friend of William's father, Prince Charles. "He knows the princes well – and he has been involved in many aspects of Prince William's life – so it wouldn't be unusual for him to be involved in guiding them."

$484,241 ‘Royal Wedding’ Jewelry Set: Japan’s Most Expensive New Year’s Deal? - Wall Street Journal

Even lavish buys can be purse-pinching steals. That is the motto being pushed by Japan's department stores as they roll out previews of luxurious New Year buys, known as "fukubukuro," enticing customers with discounted sports cars, jewels, weddings and getaway trips.

Eager shoppers line up outside their favorite stores in the wee hours at the start of every year to buy a choice "fukubukuro," a goodie bag filled with a hodgepodge of heavily discounted items for a set price. Depending on which store you choose to place your "fukubukuro" bets, contents can range from a German ham to sports memorabilia and designer clothes. The excitement in the tradition used to lie in the mysterious nature of the contents, a lottery of items unknown until after you purchase the bag. But stores are increasingly luring customers with curtain raisers, revealing splashy packages that could make a grown man fighting a midlife crisis weep.

So what are the most expensive "fukubukuro" steals?

The upscale department store Matsuzakaya set the bar high, pricing a sundry of lavish items at 40 million yen, or about $484,241. The standout package is called the "royal wedding fukubukuro," in an ode to Price William and Kate Middleton's coming nuptials. The bag, comprising a four-piece set of sapphire jewels and limited to one customer, is the priciest fukubukuro that will be on sale at the Matsuzakaya branch in the tony Ginza district on Jan. 2. The department store is retaining some element of surprise, however. The store declined to provide a picture of the jewelry set and the original value.

Other Matsuzakaya outlets are matching the price point with different items. A 2010 Porsche Boxster will be on sale at the Nagoya branch for 40 million yen as well, though the total price will exceed 45.5 million yen after taxes and maintenance fees are included. A five-night first-class trip to Paris is on the block, as is an 80-person wedding package at the Westin Nagoya Castle.

In a tip to the rise of electric cars in 2010, Seven & I Holdings co. subsidiary units Sogo-Seibu and Robinsons are offering an 18.5 million yen ($223,000) bag called the "the ultimate super eco-car fukubukuro." It includes a Tesla Roadster signature sports car and a five-night stay at a luxury resort in vacation town Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture that runs about 422,400 yen for one week during peak season.

"'Eco' was a very big trend in Japan this year but it was associated with being economical or tolerance," said Junko Komura, a Seven & I representative. "We wanted to make it more department store friendly and focus on the cool lifestyle aspect of eco-cars." Ms. Komura said this is the most expensive fukubukuro available this year, but isn't the highest to date. She said that, including all the extra amenities such as a nature tour in Kanagawa, the actual value of the package equals about 19 million yen, saving a customer roughly 500,000 yen.

Travel 2011: London for royal wedding, NY for 9/11

The Associated Press | December 22, 2010 | 08:02 PM EST

Anniversaries, events, celebrities and the economy will influence travel in 2011, from the royal wedding in London, to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks in New York.

London is sure to be crowded for the April 29 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. "If Charles and Diana got 600,000 people who came into London for that wedding, I could see a million for this one," said travel expert Pauline Frommer, creator of the Pauline Frommer Guides.

New York has also turned up on hot lists for 2011, including the No. 1 city in Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel 2011" guidebook. "For all of New York, 11 September 2011 will be a defining moment," wrote the publisher's U.S. travel editor Robert Reid. A Sept. 11 memorial, with reflecting pools set above the footprints of the World Trade Center, is expected to open in time for the anniversary of the attacks.

The 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War is also being marked this year. One of the largest commemorations takes place July 21-24 in Manassas, Virginia, where the war's first major land battle took place. A historical re-enactment there is expected to draw as many as 15,000 participants.

Etten Eller SS11
Designer Tini Bloom's 2-year-old jewelry line Etten Eller is a study in contrasts. The L.A native and Brooklyn resident crafts delicate "pearls" from nickel-plated brass and strings thin brass "sequins" onto Japanese cotton, creating necklaces and bracelets that are at once understated and industrial-looking.07.06.1610

Bloom began her line by salvaging old pocket watch parts and repurposing the dainty but detailed mechanisms into jewelry. She still produces her pocket watch collection, but is recently more focused on the strong and modern pieces such as the thick nickel-plated discs strung together on a gold chain, which has an almost tribal feel and looks great when layered with similar but smaller necklaces.

Time still plays a huge part of Bloom's collection, even though pocket watches are no longer the focus. The designer names each piece with a date that marks a significant moment in history. 03 16 1972 is  the date John Lennon and Yoko Ono were served deportation papers, as well as the name of a gold chain necklace with small silver springs. And 07 06 1610 is a necklace of hefty silver discs strung onto Japanese cotton, as well as when Galileo officially reported the 01.01.0404 discovery of moons around Jupiter.

"I like how jewelry can mark time," Bloom said during a visit to the L.A. Times offices this week. Speaking of time, she has a long history with a few other successful fashion designers/L.A natives. Bloom introduced Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava at her 16th birthday party shortly before the two departed for New York to attend Parsons. The three are still great friends and talk about collaborating in the near future. "I watched them start their line together in Brooklyn," Bloom said. "I find it exciting to share with people what's possible and I got to see how to [start a line] through watching Sophie and Lisa. That was really inspiring."

Etten Eller jewelry ranges from $250 to $350 and is available at Barneys Co-op and Creatures of Comfort.

Leading Online Honeymoon Resource, Honeymoons.com Offers Top Ten Beach Wedding Tips During Peak ... - YAHOO!

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 07:56 AM PST

Top Ten Tips for planning a beach wedding compiled from honeymoons.com's extensive roster of professional wedding planners, photographers and resorts.

Stamford, CT (PRWEB) December 23, 2010

The leading online resource for destination wedding and honeymoon planning has partnered with leading online jeweler, Amoro, to provide couples with a list of the Top Ten Tips for planning a beach wedding compiled from honeymoons.com's extensive roster of professional wedding planners, photographers and resorts.

"Planning a beach wedding seems easy enough", offers long time travel executive and honeymoons.com CEO, Thomas Curtin. "but there are a number of details you'll want to keep in mind to ensure a spectacular outdoor event."

Top Ten Beach Wedding Tips

#1 Take advantage of the "Magic Hour". The final hour of daylight always produces the most beautiful golden light which makes for gorgeous natural skin tones in the photos. Plan for your ceremony to be during this time and have your photographer research exactly when sunset is on your big day.

Trevor Dayley, Photographer
trevordayley.com

Gorgeous color and rich tones are what you'll find in the Rainbow Collection from Amoro Jewelers. Multi-colored semi-precious stone, with diamonds or without, in earrings, pendants and rings.

#2. Check the tides. Understand the tidal chart for the day you are getting married. The time of the day (or the season) may change the height level of the tide, so be sure to check so that you don't end up in a place where there is no beach left to set up your event.

Susanna Palazuelos, Certified Wedding Planner
susannapalazuelos.com

Ocean Treasures from Amoro add whimsy to any beach wedding. The collection of unique nautical treasures celebrates life and love in the islands with a wonderful assortment of charms, rings and necklaces (such as flip flops, dolphins, starfish and angelfish). These reminders of your beach wedding make for the perfect bridesmaids gifts. Plus they are affordable enough to use as your wedding favors!

#3. Lavaliere your ceremony. The sound of the breaking ocean waves is absolutely beautiful, however your guests came to hear your ceremony - so make sure they are able to by including some kind of microphone or audio system for the officiate and yourselves. This will also help your photographer be ready for the special moments - such as the big kiss!

Trevor Dayley, Photographer
trevordayley.com

Beach weddings begin and end with a simple promise, "I Do". That message comes through loud and clear with the Promise Collection from Amoro. With its classic looks," Promise" is the perfect way to declare your love. Bands available in white gold, yellow gold and Palladium.

#4. Consider alternate shelter. You may want to have a tent or other shelter available to handle unexpected downpours or guests who cannot tolerate the sun. Urge your guests to wear light weight cotton or linen to help keep cool.

Natalie John, Certified Wedding Planner
dreamyweddings.com

Compliment your tropical setting with a flirty and feminine piece of fine jewelry from the Amoro Petals Collection. Floral designs in emerald, sapphire and tanzanite translate perfectly from wedding day to everyday.

#5. Ask your photographer to use a polarizing filter. By using a polarizing filter your photographer will be able to cut out all the glare and haze that comes with reflective elements (sand, water, clouds) and produce beautiful, rich colors in your photographs.

Trevor Dayley, Photographer
trevordayley.com

Every bride, on land or by sea, needs something "blue" to guarantee good fortune. Amoro's Heavenly Blue Collection offers a fabulous assortment of blue topaz earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces. They are the perfect wedding day gift for the bride-to-be!

#6. Know the electrical capabilities. Before deciding to have your wedding on the beach, make sure you find out what the electrical capabilities are as compared to what you are going to need. For example, if you are planning on walking down the aisle to music from a CD player, make sure there is a battery operated CD player that you can use, or that there are other electrical capabilities. If you want your reception on the beach and it is going to go into the evening, find out how they can accommodate your lighting needs.

Candice Cain, Candy Cain Travel Co.
candycaintravel.com

Sometimes moonlight adds just the right amount of shine. Amoro's Silver Moonlight Collection offers shimmering sterling silver with Diamond filigree and hand set pave designs. Charming key, heart and cross earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are great solutions for bridesmaids or Mother of the Bride/Mother-in-Law gifts.

#7. Consider a "first look". The new trend is for the bride and groom see each other for the first time in a private setting before the ceremony and get most of their formal photographs taken before --rather than after -- the ceremony. More and more couples are choosing this as a way of reducing the amount of time needed after the ceremony to shoot photo, thereby allowing them to spend more time with their guests at the wedding.

Trevor Dayley, Photographer
trevordayley.com

Nothing says "spend your life with me" like the Eternity Diamond Band from Amoro.

#8. Know the legalities of where you are being married - Make sure you check with the on-site coordinator to find out how long you have to be on island before you can hold the ceremony. Some islands require you to be on island for 3 business days prior to the ceremony, others (such as Antigua) are as little as 1 business day. Some islands also do not hold ceremonies on Public Holidays, so ask your coordinator about any restrictions prior to booking the date. Make sure you both bring your required legal documents: copy of your passport, birth certificates, original divorce decree and if you have changed your name legally, bring that paperwork along, too.
Alina Armstrong, Elite Island Resorts
eliteislandresort.com

Milestones like weddings deserve statement jewelry like that of the Amoro's I Forever Do Collection, offering engagement rings, wedding bands and fabulous earrings in ruby, sapphire and emerald. This is a collection that's meant to be built on - perfect for future events such as anniversaries, birthdays and baby's births.

#9. Check access for elderly or disabled family and friends. Think about using hardboard or flooring to create walkways to your beach venue. You may also want to make sure those who may not be able to traverse sand can also enjoy the wedding from a distance.

Natalie John, Certified Wedding Planner
dreamyweddings.com

These are not your Grandmother's pearls! The Pearls Collection from Amoro offers an elegant take on the classic accessory. Beautiful cultured pearls are set in an assortment of innovative styles in earring, ring, bracelet and necklace looks.

#10. Make sure restrooms are available close to your event. If not, you may want to rent some.

Kitzia Morales, Love Mexico
lovemexicoweddings.com

When it comes to wedding jewelry, don't forget the Groom. The Gentlemen Collection from Amoro offers a wide assortment of distinctly masculine groom and groomsmen gifts – from rings and bracelets to necklaces. Add a gemstone to match the color of your eyes, sash or bouquet!

Police: Man kills bride, best man, self at wedding - msnbc.com

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 07:34 PM PST

A bridegroom fatally shot his new wife, his best man and then himself after announcing to horrified guests that he had a "surprise" for them, authorities said Monday.

Witnesses reported that 29-year-old Rogerio Damascena, a sales manager in Camaragibe, outside the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, did not give any previous indication that anything was wrong at his wedding reception, police investigator Joao Brito said.

Brito would not speculate on a possible motive, saying family members were in shock and he had not interviewed them yet.

Brito did say the killings are believed to be premeditated because of the groom's announcement and because he had hidden a gun in his father's pickup truck.

Twenty-five-year-old bride Renata Alexandre Costa Coelho and best man Marcelo Guimaraes were both killed in Saturday's murder-suicide. A brother of the bride was treated at a hospital and released.

The website Globo.com quoted a sister of the bride who left before the shootings as saying she didn't believe it was a crime of passion.

"My sister was a wonderful person who loved and wanted to be loved," Lucia Helena Coelho was quoted as saying.

"He was happy, she was happy, the party was beautiful. His family adored her and doesn't understand this," Coelho told Globo.com. "He revealed himself as a sociopath who fooled the entire family and killed his best friend, who was ... the best man."

Zara Phillips: Another royal wedding due as Zara Phillips, Mike Tindall get engaged - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:09 PM PST

Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall engaged Zara Phillips, the eldest granddaughter of the queen, is engaged to be married to longtime boyfriend Mike Tindall, putting another royal wedding in the queue along with the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Phillips, 29, is the daughter of Princess Anne and her first husband, Mark Phillips. Though she carries no title, she's 12th in line to the throne. The two were engaged Monday at their home in western England.

Tindall, 32, met Phillips in a Sydney bar during rugby's 2003 World Cup, when he played on the winning team. She is an Olympics-caliber equestrian, though she pulled out of the 2008 Beijing Games because of an injury to her horse.

In a statement, Phillips said she was "really shocked when Mike proposed but I am very happy."

Tindall said: "I am delighted that Zara has agreed to marry me. We are both very excited about the next stage of our lives together."

In other royal wedding news, the official china of the April 29 ceremony for Prince William and his Kate has gone on sale, the BBC reports. Designed and approved by the happy couple, the bone china features "the couple's entwined initials in gold and silver surmounted by Prince William's coronet and the wedding date," said Nuala McGourty, the Royal Collection's director of retail.

"Doves, white ribbons and hearts in silver, gold and gray, set against a pale-gray striped background, decorate the whole range," she said.

Bling watch: Christmas snow means jewelry refunds - WRAL

Posted: 22 Dec 2010 02:45 PM PST

Alan Perry has $250,000 on the line if at least 3 inches of snow fall in Asheville on Christmas Day, but to hear him talk, a blizzard would suit him just fine.

"Let it snow, baby! Let it snow!" Perry, a Wilmington jeweler, said Wednesday as his latest promotion brought him grins and shoppers buzzing with anticipation.

Perry's Emporium has an insurance policy that will refund the cost of all jewelry purchased in the Wilmington store between Nov. 26 and Dec. 11 if at least 3 inches of snow fall at Asheville Regional Airport on Christmas Day. The deal was first reported by the Asheville Citizen-Times.

National Weather Service meteorologist Doug Outlaw says prospects are good that Perry's promotion might pay off.

"He might actually have to. It's going to be quite an event," Outlaw said.

Outlaw says the current forecast calls for as much as 5 inches of snow for Asheville, with up to 4 inches possible from the middle of Christmas Day through the afternoon. The combination of cold air pumped in by high pressure from the north and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico by low pressure makes snow almost a certainty, according to Outlaw.

"This is looking like a perfect situation for snow," he said.

Promoting his store is nothing new to Perry. He's also sponsored a deal in which buyers get their engagement rings free if it rained on their wedding day.

The latest idea was spawned as Perry returned from a meeting in the Midwest with other jewelers, among them the operator of a Chicago store that offered free "bling" if 6 inches of snow fell on the city during a similar time frame.

"I was flying home and I was praying and meditating," he said, noting that he was also bemoaning the fact that people are likely sitting or walking on Wilmington-area beaches on Christmas Day.

"The plane was flying over Asheville and the pilot came on and said we were flying over Asheville on our final approach to Charlotte and I said, 'That's it' and that's where my great idea came from."

Perry found an insurance company that specializes in promotions like his, and he was on his way.

"It has paid off like crazy," he said.

Now, Perry says, people all over Wilmington are asking him if it's going to snow. He said people have walked up to him well after the deadline asking if they can get in on the deal. That has increased business at his store, but it hasn't bolstered the number of potential recipients, which he estimates to be around 300.

"I'm tickled," he said. "I mean, I'm praying for it to snow."

RIO DE JANEIRO (CBS/AP) Groom Rogerio Damascena fatally shot his new wife, his best man and then himself after announcing to horrified guests that he had a "surprise" for them, authorities in Brazil said Monday.

Witnesses reported that the 29-year-old  Damascena, a sales manager in Camaragibe, outside the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, did not give any previous indication that anything was wrong at his wedding reception, police investigator Joao Brito said.

Brito would not speculate on a possible motive, saying family members were in shock and he had not interviewed them yet.

Brito did say the killings are believed to be premeditated because of the groom's announcement and because he had hidden a gun in his father's pickup truck.
