Gold and its durability!

The main choices of metal for wedding rings in the past were 14 and 18 karat Gold and a little rarer Platinum.  Now–a-days many alloys determine the durability, the wearable factor and of course the cost factor of the wedding jewelry. All precious metals are shiny and beautiful especially when new. Here are some facts that  one should know about gold.

Gold is a very soft metal and on it's own would never be able to hold its shape and design. No other metal is as ductile or as malleable as gold. As a matter of fact a single ounce of gold can be drawn into  five miles of wire.
Pure gold is marked as 24 Karat and the higher the number the softer the gold i.e. 24K,18K, 14K, 10k etc.

Pure gold (24/24, or 100% gold) has a lovely strong yellow color but is very soft and not practical to use as jewelry especially not rings.
18K gold is (18/24, or 75% gold) is what's traditionally used in Europe for wedding rings.
The US most commonly uses  14K gold (14/24 or 58.33% gold) for most jewelry applications and will be more hard wearing than 18K.
10K gold (10/24 or 41.66% gold) is also a wide spread combination used word-wide especially in fashion pieces.
The UK and Ireland uses 9K gold (9/24 or 37.5%gold)  for fashion jewelry and mostly 14K for rings .
So obviously the lower the % of gold in the mix the stronger and hard-wearing the resulting metal becomes but it also becomes paler and a lesser golden color.
